Review of Denison Hatch’s Latest Novel, Terror Machine

The focus of my blog is to review book series and not individual novels. But writers are going to continue writing novels within a series even after I have done my review, so I plan on reviewing the individual novels as they come into circulation.  Denison Hatch has recently released book #3, Terror Machine, to the Jake Rivett series.

When I first started reading the Jake Rivett series with Flash Crash, I didn’t particularly like Rivett. Rivett is a New York City police detective and in Flash Crash he was a bit of a bully by intimidating possible witnesses with violence if he didn’t get the info that he needed. But with each successive addition to the series, I have really grown to like Rivett. In this latest novel, Rivett has fallen in love and we get to see a softer side to him.

In Terror Machine, New York City experiences its worst terrorist attack since 9/11. Of course, the terrorist is Muslim, but as investigators start to examine the moments leading up to the attack, they find that the terrorist had been acting rather strangely. Not like some zealot religious nut job but more like a person that had been hypnotized. As the investigation continues, a more sinister plot is revealed which involves some interesting technology.

Even though Terror Machine may seem like just another Islamic terrorist thriller, there is a lot more to it. This is really about Jake Rivett and what happens in Terror Machine will change him forever. It looks like the series will be taking a different direction and I am looking forward to it. Lots of action, interesting technology, and a whole lot of fun makes Terror Machine a must read.
